Behind the joyous presentation of the Alps at this year’s G7 summit is an agenda full of discussion points about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Leaders of the world’s seven richest countries will try to agree on how to deal with the impact of the war on global food and energy supplies, all with the specter of Covid’s resurgence looming.

At Schloss Elmau, in the Bavarian Alps, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky virtually beamed in to ask for weapons and support. It comes as Russian missiles hit the capital Kiev last weekend, the first strikes in three weeks.

Ahead of the G7 summit, US President Joe Biden also unveiled a financial package aimed at addressing health, climate and energy security, gender inequality and digital connectivity.

So why is this G7 summit so important? And what goes on behind the scenes in those gang-stop-and-chats?

After clumsiness at NATO in March, Prime Minister Boris Johnson did his best not to be pictured alone on a summit, and joked about Vladmir Putin’s pecs to colleagues.
