Ory McIlroy stated that he believes he will soon end his nearly decade-long run without a Major title after finishing third in the 150th Open.
Cameron Smith claimed the Claret Jug after a course record score of 20 under par was sealed with a smashing last round on Sundaywho had started the day four shots behind the Northern Irishman.
With his last of four Major titles in 2014, the drought will have reached its ninth year when McIlroy, 33, gets the chance to claim another one in April’s Masters, although he has performed well overall this year in all four tournaments.
“I will regret a few missed putts that slipped by, but overall it was a good week,” he stated.
“I can’t be too despondent because of how this year has gone and this year is going.
“I play some of the best golf I’ve played in a long time. So it’s just a matter of keep knocking on the door, and eventually one will open.
“In the end, it’s not a matter of life or death. I still have other chances to win the Open Championship and other opportunities to win Majors. I feel like I let it slip, but other opportunities are coming.”
Smith, 28, was speechless by his stellar run to the Open Crown, which broke Tiger Woods’ record on the Old Course to lift his first Major crown.
“I think winning an Open Championship in itself will probably be the pinnacle of a golfer’s career,” said the Australian.
“to make it round” St Andrews I just can’t believe it. This place is so cool. I like the golf course. I like the city. To hold the 150th Open here and walk away with the win is something I’ve dreamed of.
“It’s unreal to look at these names on this trophy and then add mine, I can’t figure it out. I’m definitely going to find out how many beers fit in this thing, that’s for sure.”
