The retirement age ‘must be raised’ because we are not having enough children, warns Jacob Rees-Mogg

Mr Rees-Mogg, who has six children, tweeted: “The retirement age needs to be raised, we don’t have enough children to afford the current system.”

Experts fear that the proposed move will pave the way for a retirement age above 70 for younger workers.

Last night on his GB News program he said: “Demographics are very important. The number of people in work relative to the number of retirees has been steadily decreasing – and we can’t afford the pensions we currently have because we don’t have enough working people to pay for them.”

The MP for North East Somerset, 53, admitted in 2021 that he would like to have more children.

Raising the UK’s low birth rate, Rees-Mogg said he and then Prime Minister Boris Johnson were “leading by example in this area”.

He added: “I’d really like to lead by example, but I don’t think Ms Rees-Mogg is so keen.”

However, official figures show that the number of births is already starting to rise.
