The first trailer for The Weeknd’s drama The Idol was released by HBO Max, after the Canadian singer debuted it on tour this weekend.

Promised it will be “the slopiest love story in all of Hollywood,” we’re already buzzing ahead of the music star’s upcoming TV project.

The show is set “against the backdrop of the music industry” and “centered around a self-help guru and leader of a modern cult, who develops a complicated relationship with a rising pop idol.”

After the chart debut of the clip on the opening night of its After Hours Til Dawn tour over the weekend, network HBO Max has now shared a glimpse with fans.

They captioned the trailer: ‘From the sick and deranged minds of Sam Levinson and @TheWeeknd, starring Lily-Rose Depp.

“#THEIDOL is coming to HBO Max soon.”

The trailer has it all, characters taking drugs, getting naked and getting frisky in the bedroom in snippets of the drama to come.

In a tense moment, The Weeknd’s character asks Lily-Rose Depp’s character, “Why don’t you just be yourself?”

To which she replies, “Because there is nothing about me that is recognizable.”

The minute-long clip continues with more of the same outrageous activity, before The Weeknd’s character asks his love interest, “Do you trust me?” to which she replies, “Not really.”

HBO Programming EVP Francesca Orsi said: “When the multi-talented Abel ‘The Weeknd’ Tesfaye, Reza Fahim and Sam Levinson brought us The Idol, it was clear that their subversive, revealing take on the music industry’s cult was unlike anything HBO had. ever done before.’

Fans will know Sam from his work on the teen drama series Euphoria, which he created.

He has since been nominated for a BAFTA TV Award for the series.

Amy Seimetz of The Girlfriend Experience directed the series, which was filmed in and around Los Angeles.

The Idol is coming to HBO Max later this year.
