Depending on who you ask, Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s chartreuse dress was either thrilling or snooze-fest.
While dots are one of them the strongest emerging pattern trends of the year and oversized checks are still going strong, this week the stars especially favored bold color blocks.
A red carpet premiere and a shirtless walk in the sun are on opposite sides of the dressing spectrum, but as Keke Palmer and Donald Glover proved this week, there’s a shade of yellow that will work no matter what’s on the dress. agenda.
Whether walking the red carpet, dressing up as a centaur or parading half-naked, the celebs did it in proud style this week. Here’s our thoughts on our favorites.

Best Use of Opera Gloves
I’m a Keke Palmer fan, mostly for her off-screen charisma and charm — from her Met Gala hosting last year when she was the instantly iconic ‘you know it’s your giiiiiirl’ sound to the lovely video where she takes a stroll down fashion memory lane. She seems very nice, and her fashion choices help to convey that too.
This week she wore a lot of amazing ensembles during the press tour for her new movie Nope, like this insanely chic yellow Prada column dress with classic opera gloves for a screening in Rome.
She’s also used her platform to talk about colorism in Hollywood — after some social media chatter comparing her career to Zendaya’s, Keke responded with a tweet that showed her confident spirit.
“A good example of colorism is believing that I can be compared to anyone. I am the youngest talk show host ever. The first black woman to star in her own show on Nickelodeon, and the youngest and first Black Cinderella on Broadway. I’m an incomparable talent. Baby, THIS, is Keke Palmer.” – Zoe Walker Ahwa

We had the pleasure of meeting the brilliant Nazanin when we shot her a year ago for Ensemble while she was in Aotearoa filming Lord of the Rings. Karen Inderbitzen-Waller styled and photographed her for that shoot, and Nazanin continues that tradition of working with the best fashion.
I’m so excited to see her with Erin Walsh on the Lord of the Rings promo trail. Erin works closely with Anne Hathaway, who I’ve had to ban from my best-dressed lists because she became too easy a target. I’m obsessed with this Christopher Kane wet-look dress, which somehow manages to be both modest and sexy, and the hair that perfectly highlights her pretty face.
If I sound like a fangirl, it’s because I absolutely am; I’m more excited about Nazanin on the promo pad than the show (probably one of the few Kiwis who has never seen the movies!). – Rebecca Wadey
Dear Centaur chic
I know, I know: Picking Julia Fox for Celebrity Outfit of the Week is a bit of a cop. hair stylist Brianna Andalore does a great job getting people to write about her. But this mr. Tumnus x Matrix look she posted on Instagram on Monday has layers.
I think Fox is underrated as an actor, and I was religiously listening to her podcast Forbidden Fruits long before she appeared on Kanye’s arm. I’m a real Stan. She has so much charisma that it’s a shame she’s mostly known as a stylist’s drying rack these days. So seeing this photo of her literally dressed like a horse, abs on display in the most dangerous low-rise buildings Liza Keane pants I saw it once, let me know she’s there. – Lara Daly
Best overall
After jealously watching extremely hot celebrities Parade all over the Northern Hemisphere in scanty summer clothes for what feels like an eternity (see Donald Glover below), it was really exciting to see Karen Gillan rocking out at San Diego Comic Con wearing a big butt colorful Oscar de la Renta jacket boots. You cover that delicate Scottish skin girl! – Tyson Beckett

Hot pink may be the favorite runway color of the year for celebrities, but Gugu Mbatha-Raw wearing this Alexander McQueen pleated dress was a sharp reminder of the lasting power of green.
Dressed by stylist extraordinaire Leith Clark, the look has somewhat divided the internet, with one website even make comparisons between the heavy drape and a duvet.
“I like to feel confident and powerful,” says Mbatha-Raw told Vogue about her approach to red carpet. “I want to feel like I’m wearing something I can have a great time in.”
Maybe the bed comparison used to be intentionally then. – TB
