Three children were killed on Thursday, July 14 in a landslide that buried a rural school in the Andes municipality of northwestern Colombia, authorities said.
The landslide hit a group of preschoolers and first-grade children taking a break, along with a teacher and the mother of one of the students.
“We give very sad news: three children have died in this event,” Andes mayor Carlos Osorio told media.
An earlier report had said eight children had been detained.
“Luckily, 17 students got out alive…the teacher and the mother too,” Osorio said, adding that two other children were already in stable condition at a nearby hospital.
Dozens of villagers helped army rescuers save the children.
Video footage shared on social media shows dozens of people using shovels to clear a heap of felled trees and debris. Two excavators were also used.
Eliana Rincones, the only teacher at the school, told reporters that 22 children were present at the time of the landslide.
“We were in the break when we suddenly heard something very loud; we all turned around (to look) and in a matter of seconds we were all running,” she said.
“We didn’t even know where we were going.”
The landslide was the result of heavy rainfall that ravaged much of Colombia.
