There were three golds for the South Canterbury crews in the space of a few hours at the Maadi Cup rowing regatta on Lake Karapiro on Friday.
A handful of Timaru Boys’ High School rowers achieved double success, while the promising Twizel Area School combination of Kiara Thyne and Sadie Mason made it a South Canterbury gold rush.
TBHS’s Mac Brown, Ben Allan, Luke Tomkins, Payo O’Sullivan and Finn Gollins won the boys under-16 coxed quad sculls in the morning and returned to the water in the afternoon to win the boys under-16 coxed four title.

Twizel Area School’s Kiara Thyne, left, and Sadie Mason, both aged 14, continued their winning form in the novice double sculls with a gold at the high schools’ Maadi Cup regatta on Lake Karapiro just weeks after winning of gold at the New Zealand Rowing Championships on Lake Ruataniwha.
The first A final saw the TBHS team five seconds ahead of Marlborough Boys College with St Bedes College a further two seconds behind, while the second gold saw TBHS three seconds ahead of Otago Boys High School with Whakatane in third a further two seconds behind.
Thyne and Mason then dominated the under 18 girls starting double sculls to win by almost 6 seconds from Whanganui Collegiate with a crew from Hauraki Plains College in third.
Both schools also added bronze medals with TBHS’s Josh Bartlett in the boys’ under-17 single sculls and then combined for another with Blake Parker in the boys’ under-17 double sculls while Kobe Narruhn and Ralph Henderson took third for Twizel in the boys’ under-. 18 starting skulls.
Both schools, plus crews from Craighead Diocesan face more A-finals on Saturday.
