‘Three Lionesses on a Shirt’ – England’s national anthem reworked for Euro 2022 final

After “all that oh-so is approaching” as the rousing pub song for the men’s soccer team, the familiar Three Lions chorus (Football’s Coming Home) gets a reboot on Saturday for the English European Championship 2022 women’s finalists.

Three lionesses on a shirt may not sound very catchy at first, but Ian Broudie, who wrote the hit parade in 1996 with David Baddiel and Frank Skinnerpromises some updates.

Broudie’s Lightning Seeds will be appearing with Baddiel but not Skinner in Camden, North London, for the special performance in honor of the women’s team. They are joined onstage by singer-songwriter Chelcee Grimes, who says she has also rewritten a verse, and former women’s internationals, Fara Williams, Rachel Yankey and Faye White.

Broudie insists that the specially adapted version of Three Lions to celebrate the success of the Lionesses, who face Germany tomorrow at a sold-out Wembley, has not been completely rewritten.

However, in an interview with BBC Breakfast, he revealed: “I think we’ll probably tweak some of the references to reflect the performances we’ve just seen, rather than some of the classic ones.”

The Lightning Seeds were added to the bill late this afternoon at Camden’s Electric Ballroom during an event hosted by the National Lottery. Tickets cost 5 euros and went on sale Friday. Although Skinner will not be able to join the group on stage this Saturday, a press release says he will be “applauding from the sidelines”.
