TOM Tugendhat has backed Liz Truss to become the next prime minister in the final battle in Rishi Sunak’s sinking leadership struggle.
The most recent MP to support Liz’s prime minister’s campaign, she claimed she is the only candidate ready for the job and capable of uniting the party.
Yesterday the Minister of Foreign Affairs was predicted a 90 percent chance of winning the Tory leadership racee about former chancellor Rishi Sunak.
So these last words of support for Mrs Truss written in The times could seriously amplify her fight to become the UK’s next prime minister.
Tugendhatwho is chairman of the selection committee for foreign affairs, applied for the Conservative Leadership Contest himself until he was eliminated in the third ballot earlier this month.
This popularity means that his belief in Liz’s “true conservative principles” could influence many Tory party members’ votes.
Tugendhat praised Truss’ plans to quit taxes as the cost of living rises and also praised her experience in foreign affairs.
He said the leadership contest would come down to “tax and trust,” writing, “We need to remember who is really in charge of our economy.
“It’s not the treasury that runs our businesses and generates wealth. It’s people.
“Across our country, millions of people get up every morning, come together and put their heart and soul into building a Britain that works.”
Tugendhat then added: “Liz’s plan for the economy is based on true conservative principles of low taxes, a lean state and bold supply-side reforms.
“It is not right that we have the highest tax burden in 70 years at a time of slow growth and rising energy prices.”
The MP described Liz’s position as foreign minister as “a huge advantage” in keeping the country safe.
“Liz has always stood up for British values at home and abroad,” he concluded.
Two days ago, Liz Truss also got a boost in her battle for Number 10 with support from Defense Secretary Ben Wallace.
Wallace — who is hugely popular with Tory grassroots — stated in an exclusive Sun interview that he “would love” to serve as its military leader.
Truss has also gained the support of MP Jake Berry, head of the influential Northern Research Group of Tory MPs, after vowing to deposit billions.
Yesterday Rishi Sunak wanted: woo Tory grassroots in West Sussex by declaring war on “woke up nonsense” and promises to protect British liberties.
He said: “What’s the point of putting the bulldozers in the green belt if we allow left-wing agitators to bulldoze our history, our traditions and our fundamental values?
“Whether it pulls down statues of historical figuresreplace the curriculum with anti-British propaganda, or rewrite the English language so that we can’t even use words like ‘husband, wife or mother’ without hearing that we are offending someone?”
A team truss A source said of his rallying cry against the awakening: “It’s nice to see the former Chancellor getting on board with the agenda that Liz has been talking about for years.”
Sunak also promised to protect women only spaces and sports, and removing the legal basis for people who self-identify as a different gender.
It came after Ms Truss received the biggest acclaim at a hustings Thursday for taking a tough stance on trans self-identification.
on Thursday evening, Mr Sunak defied a Channel 4 whim of Andrew Neil. Mrs. Truss refused as she was 22nd wedding anniversary.
