Billionaire philanthropist and Phones4U founder John Caudwell has lost his weight Liz Truss to become the next prime minister – and sentenced Rishi Sunak‘s treatment of the economy as ‘an utter mess’.
the pronounced Tory donor said the Treasury had underestimated the impact of the pandemic in the early stages, fueled it inflation through generous Covid support schemes and failed to grow the economy.
He said he chose Truss “on balance”, adding: “I haven’t seen Liz do too much wrong, so probably give her a chance to show she can really perform.”

Caudwell said he wouldn’t support Sunak because “he’s made a complete mess of the economy,” adding: “Everything I’ve seen Rishi do was bad and wrong.”
He said Covid measures to keep the economy going had boosted demand and pushed the price of goods higher.
At an event hosted by the entrepreneurial networking group E2Exchange in London, Caudwell said: “He totally screwed up. He made an absolute fiasco and that has led to inflation today. He has left us in a huge mess and he has done absolutely nothing to make Britain’s GDP grow.
“All he’s done is let inflation grow and put money in people’s pockets. People are rushing to buy and inflation is skyrocketing.’

Caudwell said he wanted Truss to persuade foreign companies to invest more money here, but added that “tax breaks” were not the answer.
The billionaire predicted in December that Boris Johnson might lose his grip on his leadership after ‘Partygate’.
Caudwell also criticized the candidates to become the next prime minister for failing to address climate change. Truss has said she would lower green taxes.
He said: ‘It is an absolute disaster. Not to have climate change in your manifesto or leadership statement, or worse to say, ‘We can just save some money on that’ is ridiculous.”
