Djed Spence will move to Rennes on loan from Tottenham, having previously been linked with several Premier League clubs.

It was no secret that Spence would leave Spurs in January after playing just 41 minutes of football since moving north London from Middlesbrough last summer.

Antonio Conte made it quite clear that the £13 million transfer was not his idea and it was reported last week he had given Spence the ‘green light’ to leave on loan.

This came as negotiations for Sporting’s right-back Pedro Porro stepped down, with the Portugal international poised to complete his £40 million move on deadline day.

Spence played a major role in Nottingham Forest’s promotion campaign last season and as a result there is a lot of interest in the 22-year-old.

He was thought to be moving to a Premier League club, with Leicester, Southampton, Crystal Palace and Brentford all keen, while Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen are also eyeing his situation.

But in a surprising twist, Spence heads to Rennes in France for the remainder of the season Fabricius Roman claiming that the defender has already completed his medical treatment.

In addition, the loan deal will not contain any clause or purchase option, with the Englishman still hopeful he has a long-term future at Tottenham Hotspur.

Rennes are currently fifth in Ligue 1, 11 points clear of league leaders PSG, and Spence will be able to join fellow Spurs loanee Joe Rodon.

However, he will not be the only Tottenham right-back to leave the club on deadline day Matt Doherty goes on loan to Atletico Madrid.

The next game for Conte’s side is a huge home game against Manchester City.
