Bombay: Vodafone idea continued to lose subscribers, losing 7,59,258 subscribers in May, further shrinking the subscriber base to 258.45 million.
Trust Jio the maximum number of new subscribers added at 3.11 million while Bharti Airtel 1.02 million subscribers added. End of May, jio had a total subscriber base of 408.79 million while airtel had 362.18 million.
The total number of wireless subscribers rose to 1.15 billion in May 2022, from 1.14 billion in June, according to the latest subscriber data released by the Telecom Authority of India (Traic) on Tuesday.
In contrast to the decline in April, wireless subscriptions in urban areas increased by 0.12% month-on-month to 624.55 million at the end of May. The rural subscriber base continued to grow, rising 0.4% to 520.96 million in the month.
Reliance Jio still held the largest share of the wireless subscriber pie at 35.69%, widening the gap with second-placed Bharti Airtel, with a market share of 31.62%. Vodafone Idea’s market share fell further to 22.56%.
The TRAI data showed that both Airtel and Jio managed to increase their share of active users (VLR) at the peak VLR in May. Airtel has 354.86 million active users (97.98% of the total subscriber base), followed by Reliance Jio with 383.31 million active subscribers (93.39%).
Contrary to the trend of recent months, the total wireless telephony density grew from 83.05% in April to 83.20% in May, especially in rural areas – from 57.94% in April to 58.15% in May. Urban wireless telephony saw a small drop – from 129.87% to 129.83%.
In total, 7.97 million subscribers requested Mobile Number Portability (MNP), increasing the number of cumulative requests from 697.57 million at the end of April to 697.57 at the end of May.
Telephone subscribers continued to grow, albeit at a much slower pace, reaching 25.23 million in May from 25.16 million at the end of April.
State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSBL) led with a market share of 28.67%, followed by Jio with 26.7%, followed by Bharti Airtel with 23.66%.
Total broadband subscribers grew 0.75% month-over-month from 788.77 million in April to 794.68 million in May.
Total telecom subscription grew 0.25% month-on-month to 1.17 billion at the end of May.
