McKenna expects a Man Utd return

Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna feels he is closing in on a sensational return to Manchester United as Erik ten Hag's replacement.

McKenna is keen to return to United, where he was previously assistant boss and first-team coach.

The 38-year-old's agents are pushing hard for the deal and the Red Devils are willing to take a chance on him.

Mauricio Pochettino, who left Chelsea on Wednesday, also remains in the mix.

While two other former Blues bosses, Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter, are also candidates.

But sources said last night that McKenna was “in the driver's seat” in the race to become United boss when the inevitable ax fell on Ten Hag after the FA Cup final.

Martin about administrative merry-go-round

Russell Martin says he has no interest in joining the managerial merry-go-round as he leads Southampton to the Premier League.

Both promoted Championship managers, Enzo Maresca and Kieran McKenna, will leave Leicester and Ipswich respectively after winning promotion.

But if Saints triumph over Leeds in Sunday's play-off final, Martin does not expect to be linked with the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea and wants to focus on continuing at St Mary's.

I don't think so, no. The championship is full of very good coaches. It's great for them and it certainly shows the quality of the Championship this season.

For various reasons I have not spent more than two seasons at a club.

It was painful to leave both of my last two teams and I don't want to feel the pain of having to leave anyone else so soon because we love it here and really enjoy it.

I hope we can continue building here for a long time. There is no rush to do anything, it is a very exciting project here.

Co-owner Crystal Palace focuses on Everton

Crystal Palace co-owner John Textor is ready to sell his stake in Selhurst Park to buy Everton.

The American businessman, who bought a 40 percent share in Palace in 2021, has long clashed with chairman Steve Parish over the direction of the club and has now decided to sell.

Textor has engaged US bank Raine, which oversaw the sale of Chelsea and Jim Ratcliffe's purchase of Manchester United, to find a buyer for its stake.

The entrepreneur, whose Eagle Football group also owns Lyon, Botafogo and Molenbeek, has confirmed he is also interested in taking over Everton.

Struggling investment group 777 is currently under an exclusivity window to complete the purchase of the Toffees, but the process has been riddled with problems.

Callum Hudson-Odoi offers war

Nottingham Forest are gearing up for a bidding war for Callum Hudson-Odoi when the transfer window opens next month.

Tottenham led a three-way chase for the 23-year-old who capped the season with three goals in Forest's last three games.

Ange Postecoglou sees the pacey frontman as a perfect fit for his attacking Spurs side, but faces competition from at least two other Premier rivals.

Forest want to keep Hudson-Odoi but must complete at least one major sale by the end of June to avoid breaching profit and sustainability rules again.

They will have to consider selling one of their gold nuggets, with Morgan Gibbs-White and Brazilian defender Murillo by far their biggest assets.

Both are valued by the club at £70 million and would ease Forest's financial burden in one fell swoop if someone comes in with a strong offer early in the window.

However, Hudson-Odoi's value has risen to £30 million – around TEN TIMES the fee they paid Chelsea to sign him last September.

Chelsea held talks with Maresca

Chelsea have held talks with Leicester City boss Enzo Maresca as they intensify their search for a new manager.

Maresca is one of three main candidates for the role, alongside Kieran McKenna from Ipswich and Thomas Frank from Brentford.

There is no clear favorite among the trio at this stage, but Maresca was encouraged by early discussions.

The Italian, who has joined King Power from Manchester City's coaching staff, has included a £10million release clause in his deal.

Chelsea are yet to discuss the fine details of a contract for the 44-year-old, although it is thought he would be given a longer contract than Mauricio Pochettino's two-year contract with an option.

The Blues are keen to have a new manager in place by the end of next week, which will be the third permanent appointment for the club's American owners after Graham Potter and Pochettino.
