A transvestite* identified as “Amarachi” who was arrested in Asaba, Delta State, has been released on bail.
In a viral video, Amarachi said during his interrogation that he is a resident of Imo state, but lives in Lagos.
Amarachi also admitted to being an *employee since 2016, but did not say whether the two men he met knew of his biological sex before paying for his services.
After his confession, he was arrested and held in prison for days, after which he was later charged in court with having carnal knowledge against the order of nature.
Two human rights organizations, Dynamic Initiative for Healthcare and Human Rights (DIHHR) and Levites Initiative for Freedom & Enlightenment (LIFFE). legal aid provided to the accused.
The organizations were represented by Samuel Uchenna and Mx. Emmanuella David-Ette, who eventually helped Amarachi get bail.
Speaking to the African Human Rights Media Network NoStringsNG, about her involvement in the case, trans and intersex activist David-Ette said the experience highlighted advocacy gaps that needed to be addressed.
“Working on this case made me even more convinced why we should create space for stakeholder advocacy. By stakeholders I mean judges, lawyers, police officers, etc. I could also find out who are potential allies from the things that have been said, but we are hopeful,” she said.
Although Amarachi has now been released, she is still expected to appear in court for further consideration of the case. If convicted, Amarachi faces up to 14 years in prison.
