Donald Trump said he was prevented from awarding himself the Congressional Medal of Honor — the highest award for military bravery in action — as he headlined the Turning Point USA Student Action Summit.
“As president, I wanted to give myself the Congressional Medal of Honor, but they wouldn’t let me… They said it would be inappropriate,” Trump told a crowd of right-wing student activists in Tampa, Florida, on Saturday. night.
Elsewhere in his comments, which came two days after the eighth public hearing of the Jan. 6 commission’s investigation into the events before and during the Capitol riots and his pivotal role, the former president shared how a friend had described him as “the most persecuted person in the history of our country”.
“I never thought about it that way. I never had time. I always fought these people who tried to persecute me,” he said.
“I didn’t have time to think about persecution because I was fighting persecution. Certainly, no politician or president has been treated the way I have been treated.”
Mr. Trump made a similar claim in a speech Friday night at a “Save America” rally in Arizona.
In a lengthy address to student leaders on Saturday night after a WWE-esque entrance to the podium, the former president walked through his well-worn list of complaints about the climate crisis, the media, transgender people and his ambivalence toward NATO.
In a moment that excited the crowd, the former president, returning to his own alleged persecution, said: “If I announced I was not going to run for office, the persecution of Donald Trump would stop immediately. That’s what they want me to do.”
“But you know what? There’s no chance I’ll do that,” he told the screams and cheers of the crowd.
On Friday, nearly two hours passed in Arizona before Mr. Trump finally called Thursday’s January 6 hearing and called it a hoax.
“Where does it stop? Where does it end?” he said of the House investigation. “Never forget: everything this corrupt establishment does to me revolves around preserving their power and control over the American people, for whatever reason. They want to harm me in any form so that I can no longer represent you.”
“If I were to announce that I would no longer run for political office, the persecution of Donald Trump would end immediately,” he said.
“They’re coming after me because I’m standing up for you.”
Also on Friday, the crowd — otherwise excited about Mr Trump and his favorite candidates in the upcoming midterm elections — reacted negatively when he named Eli Crane, who is running in the Republican congressional primaries.
“And a highly respected man just approved by me today, future Congressman for the 2nd District, Eli Crane,” said Mr. Trump. Within seconds the screaming started.
The former president seemed somewhat surprised by the response and smiled awkwardly as he looked at the source of the noise.
“But you like me, right?” he managed to say with a chuckle.
