A tsunami warning was issued for Tonga this morning after an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 on the Richter scale.

Tonga's meteorological service issued the warning just before 10am local time on Monday (9am NZT).

People on the island were advised to evacuate inland to higher ground or move to the upper floors of a steel or concrete building.

According to the US Geological Survey, the magnitude 6.6 earthquake occurred 70 kilometers northwest of Fangale'onga, at a depth of 112 kilometers.

Tsunami sirens have also sounded and Tongan officials have warned people to evacuate coastal areas and move to higher ground.
