Twitter sees Liz Truss mimicking Thatcher outfit during Tory leadership debate

whiter users were quick Liz Truss seemingly impersonating a Margaret Thatcher outfit for her performance at Channel 4’s Tory leadership debate.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs wore a black blazer and white shirt with a large bow for Friday’s event, matching exactly what the former Conservative Prime Minister wore in a 1979 election broadcast.

Hundreds of viewers took to the social media platform to point out the striking resemblance.

One tweet, which garnered more than 4,500 likes, wrote: “Liz Truss has recreated Margaret Thatcher’s appearance from her 1979 election broadcast in great detail.”

Another joked: “Liz Truss Margaret Thatcher Tribute Act is for rent”.

Ms Truss joined Tory leader contenders Tom Tugendhat, Rishi Sunak, Kemi Badenoch and Penny Mordaunt for the first live televised debate hosted by Krishnan Guru-Murthy.

Asked when she had stood up for integrity and honesty, Liz Truss told the debate: “I stood by Boris Johnson“Of course I discussed him privately, but I supported him for the leadership elections.”

“I was part of his cabinet and owed him my loyalty.”

She also seemed to be taking a swipe at Mr Sunak’s record as chancellor in her final comments.

After the ex-chancellor, she said: “As a country, we face great challenges, the worst economic crisis in a generation, a terrible war that Russia has waged in Ukraine, after decades of very slow growth.

“This is not the time for continuity of our current economic policy.

“We have to be brave, we have to do things differently, we have to cut taxes, we have to unleash growth and we have to unleash the potential of all people in our great country.”
