Two people have been confirmed dead in Kaduna after a clash between some bandits and a splinter Boko Haram sect, the Ansaru terror sect erupted.

Ishaq Kasai, the chairman of the Birnin Gwari Emirate Progressive Union, said in a statement that some bandits on motorcycles attacked Damari, Kazage district in eastern Birnin Gwari state, killing two local residents.

Kasai also said the attack that took place on Wednesday, July 13, set fire to shops, vehicles and a private hospital.

According to him, the clash between the two terror groups lasted more than two hours with the Ansaru, with superior firepower overwhelming the bandits, who also wielded advanced weapons.

The BEPU chairman also announced that the clash between the terror groups forced hundreds of people to flee their communities.

The statement read: “Bandits with about 200 on motorcycles, brandishing advanced weapons, targeted and attacked Damari town of Kazage Ward in the eastern part of Birnin-Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

“The attack took place around 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13, 2022, as Ansaru members preached to locals in the city.

Hearing the sporadic gunfire from the bandits, the Ansaru members approached them and began exchanging fire. They clashed for about an hour. The Ansaru members who were also heavily armed overpowered the bandits causing them to retreat and run away.

“During the collision, some damage was done to the city. A shop was burned, two vehicles were burned, a private hospital was burned and two local residents (workers) were also killed by the bandits on their way from the farm, as the bandits ran away to the forest.

“The private hospital was accidentally burned due to the fire spread of the second vehicle burned nearby.

“As a result, most community members appreciate and applaud the Ansaru members for defending the city from the attack of the bandits, without whom they believe the situation could have been more damaging.

“Hundreds of people, including women and children, migrated from the city as a result of the attack.

“The attack was highly organized because the armed bandits knew that the Ansaru members were covering the city. Therefore, it was opposed by the Ansaru members.

“However, the number of casualties between the armed bandits and the Ansaru members is not certain.

“The Ansaru members continue to preach and apply Shari’a law to the local people and also advise them to acquire weapons to defend themselves from enemies, and to fight the government, to establish what they believe to be Islamic call state.”
