The fire service helped the trapped passenger after a vehicle drove over a bank.

Two people were seriously injured on Tuesday night after the vehicle they were traveling in drove over a steep cliff in Manawatū.

Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman Murray Dunbar said crews were called to the incident at 8.30pm at Rangiwahia, on Main South Rd, near Āpiti.

Three devices were sent to the remote location and two people met the crew on arrival, but one person was trapped in the vehicle “down by the river”.

“They were helped by us to free,” he said.

“Two people appear to have been seriously injured and another suffered minor injuries.”

Dunbar said the trapped passenger was airlifted to hospital and the crew left the scene at around 11:40 p.m.

The investigation into the circumstances of the crash was ongoing.
