Michael Stenger, a sergeant in the US Senate who resigned after the January 6 riots at the Capitol, died. He was 71 years old.

Stenger died of natural causes on Monday, according to two people familiar with the matter. One said he was diagnosed with cancer and was ill. People did not publicly discuss the details of his condition, but spoke to the Associated Press subject to anonymity.

Stenger has been a Senate guard since 2018 and previously worked for the US Secret Service for over 30 years.

Sen. Mitch McConnell, then leader of the majority, demanded the resignation of Stenger the day after the Trump mob attacked the Capitol. Sen, the top Democrat in the Senate. Chuck Schumer vowed to dismiss Stenger when he became a majority leader in the Senate later in the month.

House guard, Paul Irving, and Parliamentary police chief Steven Sund also resigned after the riots.

Stenger and Irving testified to the Senate Rules Committee in February 2021 about the security of the Capitol, its response to attacks, and its decisions over the days leading up to the riots. Place national guards in the Capitol to curb violence. Stenger was also widely mentioned in the report of the Commission investigating the attack.

The news that Stenger died on Tuesday fueled an unfounded conspiracy theory online. Some social media users called his death “suspicious” and tried to link it to a surprise announced by the House of Representatives investigating the Capitol riots at a hearing on January 6. The Stenger died of natural cause, and there is no evidence he was set to testify at the hearing. Cassidy Hutchinson, an aide to the Trump White House, testified before the committee.

Other posts misidentified the cause of death of Stenger and falsely claimed that he was shot and killed in the street with a targeted attack. These claims seemed to confirm details from the 2013 report on the unrelated death of the 20-year-old in California of the same name.
