The University of Michigan on Wednesday appointed Santa Ono, president and vice-chancellor of the University of British Columbia, to head the university after the former president was fired in disgrace and it resolved an *attack scandal with a settlement worth nearly half a billion dollars .
Ono has been running the Canadian School since 2016. Prior to that, he was president of the University of Cincinnati and senior vice provost and deputy to the provost at Emory University in Georgia.
“I live to serve and I believe in leading by example,” said Ono. “I will give 150% to the University of Michigan. As of today, I am proud to be a Michigan Wolverine.”
Ono takes over from Mary Sue Coleman, the interim president of the Ann Arbor School. His appointment was unanimously approved by the eight-member regent board on Wednesday. He is the 15th president of the university and received a standing ovation from the regents and attendees.
Ono, 59, will officially take office on October 13.
Former President Mark Schlissel was removed earlier this year after emails were discovered describing an alleged inappropriate relationship between him and a subordinate.
The board of regents then appointed Coleman, who succeeded Schlissel as president in 2014.
University has been rocked by allegations surfaced in 2020 by hundreds of men who said they *were attacked by the late Robert Anderson, a campus doctor who spent nearly 40 years in Michigan. He died in 2008. In January, the school announced that $490 million settlement with Anderson’s prosecutors.
Separately, Michigan reached an agreement to settle a lawsuit brought by students who wanted to force changes in the way the school protects the campus from *misconduct.
And the university paid $9.25 million to eight women who reported emotional or *abuse by Martin Philbert, who rose over 25 years from professor to provost, Michigan’s highest-ranking academic official. He was removed in 2020.
During a question-and-answer session with reporters, Ono said he takes student safety very seriously and that at the University of British Columbia, he “is the last word on discipline in cases like this.”
“I have a lot of direct experience of the damage this kind of thing, *sexual assault and harassment, does to young men and women,” Ono said. “And so it’s unacceptable.”
Ono is a prolific tweeter and avid cheerleader for his schools.
In Cincinnati, he threw away T-shirts at football games and surprised freshmen by helping them move into their dorm rooms. And he used Twitter to provide updates on everything from how the school fared in a US college ranking to the score of a rugby match.
“You will find that I was one of the first presidents to embrace social media. Back then it was Twitter, but there’s so much more now,” said Ono. “If you want to communicate with the students, they are on Instagram. There is also such a thing as TikTok, but I’m not brave enough to go into that yet.”
Michigan Regent Denise Ilitch called it “a lucky damn day.”
Regent Mark Bernstein said it was important to the regents that the new appointment appreciates the school’s sporting prowess.
“Athletics is the gateway to our university. Any successful Michigan president should appreciate this fact,” Bernstein told The Associated Press. “Santa Ono has a down-to-earth enthusiasm for top sport. He fully understands the challenges and opportunities of college athletics. ”
Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Ono holds a biology degree from the University of Chicago and a doctorate in experimental medicine from McGill University. His research focus is the immune system, eye inflammation and age-related macular degeneration. Ono was a professor of pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
Also an accomplished cellist, Ono is the son of a Japanese-born professor who taught mathematics at the University of British Columbia in the 1960s. He grew up in the US and has US and Canadian citizenship.
Ono is married to Wendy Yip, who trained as an immunologist at McGill and an attorney at Boston University. They have two daughters.
