He told Sky News: “I’m the defense secretary in a department, all the heads of department will of course say they want more money.
“In the here and now we have absolutely enough money, we also have enough money for next year. What you find in government in different departments is that despite the fact that you get amounts that you have, then you have to spend them well and I am determined to make sure that we spend our money and get it out the door.
“I think you will see in a whole range of government departments that despite settlements, you can’t start building a hospital or building roads right away.
“It is no different for defense. So look, for the here and now and for that comprehensive spending review scheme, we’re definitely in the right place.”
