BEACHGOERS have been warned to stay away from a popular beach after growing concerns that a rotting whale carcass could attract hungry sharks to the area.
Authorities in Victoria have issued a “dangerous animal” warning for Big Beach near Mallacoota as the Department of Environment Land Water and Planning wild animals keep following a dead whale that can be deadly shark infection.
“Because of a whale carcass, there could be an increase in shark activity,” the Victorian Fisheries Authority told visitors.
Surfers and swimmers have been asked to stay out of the area to avoid being mistaken for prey.
“You have to be extra careful until the whale has perished,” the advice was.
“Stay informed and do not enter the water on closed beaches. Any shark over 2 meters in length is considered dangerous.”


The warning comes after a huge white humpback whale washed up earlier this month on a sandbar accessible only by water, about a kilometer from Mallacoota.
Visitors are encouraged to notify authorities if they see anything in the water.
Other beaches in the area have also asked beachgoers to be extra vigilant.
“Always swim, dive or surf with a friend” [and] swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches,” the guide reads.
