The United States Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies (AMMTO) a released request for information (RFI) to seek stakeholder feedback on the Energy Efficiency Scaling for Two Decades (EES2) Initiative and the draft EES2 Research and Development (R&D) Roadmap accompanying this RFI. The roadmap outlines the technology R&D required to increase the energy efficiency of semiconductor applications by a factor of 1000 over the next twenty years.
Semiconductor materials, such as silicon, are used to build critical components of industrial-scale data centers, smartphones, computers, solar cells, electric vehicles and many other products that millions of Americans use every day. Over the past 30 years, energy efficiency improvements in products made by the semiconductor industry have lagged behind the rising global demand for computing and artificial intelligence technologies.
Since 2010, total energy consumption for semiconductor applications has doubled every three years, and by 2030, if this rate of increase continues, the semiconductor industry could consume nearly 20 percent of global energy production. The EES2 National Initiative aims to put the semiconductor industry back on a path of doubling its energy efficiency every two years to increase the economic competitiveness of U.S. microelectronics manufacturers and strengthen domestic clean energy supply chains.
AMMTO seeks input from industry, academia, research laboratories, government agencies, and other stakeholders on issues related to energy efficiency in the semiconductor industry, particularly for computer applications. Feedback on the first version (1.0) of the roadmap accompanying this RFI is of particular interest.
With this RFI, AMMTO is requesting input on the following three categories:
- Aims and objectives of the EES2 initiative
- Step-by-step plan document
- Process and future steps.
Feedback is also essential for the EES2 initiative, which aims not only to improve the semiconductor industry and the energy efficiency of its products, but also to accelerate the application of these technologies in different sectors and ensure rapid adaptation to constantly changing market and environmental requirements.
Responses to the RFI must be submitted electronically to [email protected] no later than 5:00 PM ET on September 30, 2024.
Thanks to US Department of Energy.
