A savvy driver was able to cover the cost of his rising energy bill with the money he earns by returning energy for profit.
Paul says the move has reduced his energy bill to near zero.
“We have largely relieved our anxiety about a 300% increase in billing,” he said. “Last year, we paid £ 7.50 a month for electricity.”
Miller reports that the money-saving hack stems from his participation in the “Vehicle to Grid” trial by power company Ovo and software company Kaluza.
He says the car is capable of storing electricity, so it essentially acts like a huge battery.
Paul said: “I only drive a few miles a day and spend the rest of the time sitting on the driveway, which is less valuable.”
He connects the Nissan Leaf to charge during off-peak hours, and the Kaluza app calculates what he needs for his personal use and what he can sell back to the National Grid when he needs it most.
By selling it back to the grid, he earned £ 164, but spent only £ 93 a month charging his car.
