David (Jason Durr) was still reeling from the shock of his son (Harry Collett) who had a shooting around his school and then died on a recent episode of Casualty, and still bears the scars of being beaten up. to be by an angry mob. to find some sort of normality by working.

This despite the fact that it was the day of Ollie’s funeral. Dylan (William Beck) had kindly arranged the service and told the pastor that Ollie’s mother wouldn’t be coming at all and that he wasn’t sure about David.

He was surprised to see David in the ER in his work clothes later, but David begged to be left alone to do his job. “Be my friend for once, not my boss,” I begged Dylan, who had been doing just that the morning.

It was a typical day in the ER, with patients including the almost obligatory relative of a staff member, a woman whose fingers had been severed by a samurai sword, and a little girl who had a habit of wandering. alone through the hospital—sometimes carrying a severed finger.

All these stories had something to say about parenting. While many people—including David himself—thought David needed to know that Ollie was capable of such horrific violence and was somehow to blame, we saw other parents doing things wrong.

Faith (Kirsty Mitchell) realized that her daughter Natalia (Zoe Brough), who was in the hospital after a sex game went wrong, had aspects of her life that Faith had no idea about. While offering a timely and important lesson in consent (“Sex should always be about pleasure, always”), Faith realized that her previously judgmental attitude toward David had been too harsh and she told him he deserved to say goodbye to David. his son.

At one point, David was accidentally elbowed in the face when he got into an argument with the samurai sword victim’s stepfather (who was definitely not a good example of parenting). In a panic, he rushed to the safety of a pantry and locked himself in, only to find it occupied. Millie (Seosaimhin Hennelly), the little girl who kept drifting away from her own boisterous and angry mother (Julie Atherton), was crouched in the corner.

Millie’s mother had previously told her to stay away from David because he was a bad man, after she recognized him as Ollie’s father. In her innocent way, Millie helped David open up a bit as he explained about Ollie. “My son has done something very bad,” he told her. “Is he still your friend?” she asked him.

Later, David decided that he would go to church after all. He had even prepared a few words, and Dylan had made sure as many of the staff team as possible were there for support. David asked for a moment alone, and as the organ played, he looked at the new grave of one of the victims of the shooting and thought of Ollie as a little boy and as a young man.

Looking very alone and vulnerable, he turned and walked away.
