Bombay: Vodafone idea (Vi) focuses on partnerships to grow its business solutions vertically in its quest to transform from a telco to a techco in the 5G era, said a senior executive.

“The 5G ecosystem is still evolving. Our intention is to work overtime industrywork with different use cases to see if you can empower users and work with them to find ways to accelerate use case adoption,” said Arvind Nevatia, chief enterprise business officer, Vodafone ideatold ET.

Vi has shown real-world examples of business applications such as Industry 4.0, public safety in smart cities, smart healthcare, smart construction, emergency response using drones, enhancing sports coaching for high performance, and OTT in car and driver safety monitoring in connected vehicles during its 5G -taste.

“We will continue to work with enterprise customers and partners to prioritize and develop 5G use cases for real-world deployments,” said Nevatia.

The telecom operator is working with partners and customers to build private 4G LTE solutions to drive Industry 4.0.

“We are partnering with L&T Smart World & Communications to set up a private LTE network. Together with Nokia and L&T, we are working on a proof-of-concept at L&T Heavy Engineering’s AM Naik Heavy Engineering Complex in Surat’s Hazira,” said Nevatia.

In its annual report released earlier this month, Vi said it has an increasing focus on new revenue streams and strengthening propositions in Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud service. It aims to strengthen customer collaboration with a range of offerings, such as Vi Integrated IoT, an end-to-end IoT solution, managed SIP, Vi Cloud Firewall Service, and Business Plus’ bundled mobility offerings.

The company does not state business segment revenue as a contributor to total revenue. However, analysts believe the segment is still small in the bigger picture. Competitor Bharti Airtel explains the statistic and on June 30, Airtel Business accounted for 19% of the company’s total revenue.

Enterprise operations are expected to generate 40% of 5G revenue for the Indian telco, according to industry estimates.

“One of the most important aspects of a 5G network is that it offers very high capacities and supports mass machine-type communication. This will power several Industry 4.0 vertical applications, so it’s very useful for the future of IoT. We will work closely with the ecosystem to build our IoT roadmap,” said Nevatia.

Among its Integrated IoT solutions, telco offers end-to-end IoT solutions beyond connectivity, across three industries: Smart Mobility, Smart Utilities, and Smart Infrastructure.

“We are seeing good customer adoption (in the rapidly changing consumer goods, manufacturing and automotive sectors),” said Nevatia.

The telco also hopes to leverage the expertise of its UK parent company Vodafone Group, which has implemented 5G in many markets.
