Watch glass window fall 13 floors from tower block after ‘bird strike’

This is when a pane of glass falls 130 feet to the ground after developers in South West London were unable to repair a bird’s impact damage for days.

A local MP said it was a “miracle that no one was injured” through the window when it fell at 3pm on Monday in an area normally bustling with shoppers in High Street Colliers Wood.

The bird slammed into the window of 18-story Britannia Point on Thursday, but despite the resident’s concerns, it was not repaired until it fell four days later.

Labor MP for Mitcham and Morden, Siobhain McDonagh, has written an open letter asking developers Criterion Capital to provide an “urgent response”.

Ms McDonagh wrote: “Amazingly, I understand that no one was under the glass when it fell and so no one was injured. There is no question that this is a coincidence and that serious damage could have been caused.

“Can you please explain what exactly happened and how this incident happened? It is imperative that there is a full inspection of the building, inside and out.”

Labor Cllr Stuart Neaverson, who tweeted the footage, said: “If it was indeed a bird strike, it is shocking that Criterion Capital took four days to resolve such a serious problem.”

The building manager apologized to the residents and urged them not to use that entrance again.

In a statement to residents, he said: “On Monday, a window on the 13th floor broke and fell to the ground. This problem, caused by a bird hitting the window, was reported last Thursday.

“Although maintenance was scheduled to fix it on Monday, due to meteorological conditions, the window cracked before the arrival of maintenance. Fortunately no one was injured.”

He added: “On behalf of Criterion Hospitality, I would like to apologize if the incident left tenants feeling unsafe and insecure.”

The Merton Council has confirmed that the authority’s building management team has visited the site to ensure there are no immediate risks.

A spokesperson said:[The building control team] will be conducting a more detailed rappelling survey as an immediate priority to check each window, and we have requested that this be done urgently. The safety of residents is paramount and we are closely monitoring the situation with the owners.”

Criterion Capital has been contacted for comment.
