A group of locals said the estate would block views of the Romney Marsh for miles.

They also claimed that it would hurt locally wild animalscause flooding and make the area overpopulated.

Resident Michelle McDonald said: “The roads in and around the village are in no way suitable for all the extra traffic this will bring.

'There are now problems with illegal and dangerous parking in the village which will never be resolved.

'Our GP practice, school and sewerage system will not be able to cope with yet another housing development of this large scale.

“It would cause a huge population increase in the village. The development will be an eyesore at the top of the hill.”

Hallam Land Management plans to build 170 houses on the estate, two-fifths of which are considered affordable.

The developer has promised to build a 6.5 hectare park, a new road and flood defenses near the houses. KentOnline reports.

It also promised to keep homes under two and a half stories and protect public rights of way.

But local Martin Cotton said: 'Enough is enough, plan or no plan. Building over Kent has taken long enough.

“The infrastructure cannot now cope with the population in these areas.”

Hallam's new housing estate would bring around 400 people to the village, increasing its population by around a quarter.

NHS Kent and Medway have asked the developer to raise £146,000 to help ease the pressure on local GP operations.

A local conservation group said: “This is a completely irresponsible and aggressive application that would paralyze the area with traffic.

'The spot that overlooks the entire Romney Marsh and is visible from miles away.

“It is on a prominent hill in a very sensitive area for wildlife. Any development would tower over the neighboring village.”

THE BEETING

But the developer said: “Our vision is to create a high-quality, landscape-oriented development.

“The new homes and community facilities will integrate seamlessly with the village of Hamstreet.”

A spokesperson added: “There is an identified housing shortage across the borough.

“Ashford Borough Council is unable to demonstrate a five-year housing supply.

“Following the approval of this outline application, it is expected that final approval will be sought.

“This enables infrastructure works, such as intersections, pedestrian and bicycle connections and drainage facilities.”

Ashford Borough Council said: “A planning application to develop this site for up to 170 homes is being considered.

“We cannot comment on the details of a live application, but the impact of the development will be fully assessed.”

It is believed that less than one percent of the land in the Kent district is used housing – the lowest share in Great Britain.
