Five roads have been closed and more than 20 have been affected by flooding in Clutha district, south of Dunedin, on Thursday after heavy rains hit the area on Wednesday.
And the Metservice is warning that the wet weather in the south isn’t over just yet, with more rain forecast over the weekend and heavier rain on Monday in Southland and Clutha.
The Clutha County Council has said Toko Mouth Rd, Black Bridge Rd Tokoiti, Elliotvale Rd and Butts Rd were all closed on Thursday afternoon and that Coal Gully Rd would remain closed until further notice after some of it was washed away.
And while some Southerners have had a break from the rainy weather on Thursday, more is on the way.

Metservice meteorologist Angus Hines said it would be “a mixed bag” for the next few days.
“It will flip between sunny outbreaks and showers, with a fairly cool southwesterly wind that will keep temperatures down,” he said.
“There will be more rain early in the week with heavy rain on Monday and showery weather on Tuesday, but the good news is that it will improve from Wednesday.”

Heavy rain and snow are returning for some areas around Aotearoa, but an easing of the nasty weather is in sight for the weekend.
This week’s deluge in the Clutha district had recorded 88mm of rain in 48 hours at the Glendhu monitoring station near Dunedin and 71mm at Lochindorb near Clinton.
In Southland, the most rain fell at Lora Station, where 45mm was recorded over the same period.
“A lot of places in Southland have recorded in their twenties, which is still quite a drop of rain,” Hines said.
