‘We’ve paid our dues – it’s not fair for the elderly’

One retiree has expressed growing concern about rising bills and believes it is time the government intervened to ensure older people don’t fall victim to inflation.

ill Rothwell (89), from Drimnagh, Dublin, is a widower, grandfather of six and great-grandfather of two and, like all retirees, he has noticed the rise in his grocery and utility bills due to rising inflation.

“I can handle it,” Mr. Rothwell said. “But it’s getting way too expensive. Every time I go shopping, the bill seems to go up.

“I come from a generation that has gone through hard times before and while this generation has had the pandemic and now the cost of living is very high, when I was a young man we had our own problems, such as polio and tuberculosis, as well as recessions.

“Each generation has its own challenges.

“However, I don’t think older people should pay the price of high inflation when they go shopping or pay their gas and electricity bills.

“They have already paid their dues to society, as have I. I believe the government really needs to step in now to do something to help older people.”

Mr Rothwell, whose wife Rosaleen died 10 years ago, added that he believes some are raising prices when not necessary.

“When I go to the store, I see 30 percent added to my bill compared to a few months ago,” he added.

The war in Ukraine is blamed, Putin is blamed, but I believe some are taking the opportunity to just raise prices across the board and it must stop.

“I think this government needs to help people now and do something about the price increases.”
