Five Tory MPs are still in the race for the Conservative Party leader – and our next prime minister.
That Boris Johnson has resigned, either Penny Mordaunt, Liz TrussKemi Badenoch, ex-chancellor Rishi Sunak or Tom Tugendhat will replace him in the top position.
Ultimately there will only be two candidates, and we won’t know the winner until September 5 – but politically engaged Britons can take a closer look at any future prime minister in a series of upcoming TV debates before then.
When will the debates be on TV? And where can you watch them?
Here’s everything you need to know.
What time is the Tory leadership debate?
The first debate on the Tory leadership contest airs tonight (Friday 15 July) at 7.30 pm.
It will be a 90-minute debate hosted by Channel 4 News station Krishnan Guru-Murthy, with all five candidates answering questions from a studio audience.
How can you watch on TV?
The debate will be broadcast live on Channel 4 from 7.30pm – you can also stream the debate via Channel 4’s website.
Louisa Compton, Head of News Current Affairs, Specialist Factual and Sport at Channel 4, said: “We are delighted that all five candidates have agreed to participate in Channel 4’s leadership debate and answer questions from voters across the UK.
“This debate will be an essential viewing for those wanting to learn more about our next prime minister and what she or he stands for.”
The second debate on the Tory leadership contest will be broadcast on ITV on Sunday 17th July at 7pm.
Sky News will broadcast the third debate live on Tuesday, July 19 at 8 p.m., and it will be hosted by news anchor Kay Burley.
By then, fewer candidates are expected to be left in the leadership race, following a vote on Monday, July 18.
