TL; DR

  • WhatsApp continues to develop app customization features for its iOS client, with the latest beta version hinting at new chat themes.
  • In addition to the standard green shade, users may be able to choose between blue, white, pink and purple. This color would apply to the chat bubbles and wallpaper.
  • WhatsApp has also been working on a feature that will allow iPhone users to change the accent color of the app.

As compared to TelegramWhatsApp has always been seen as simpler, less customizable Instant Messaging (IM) app. That could soon change, however, as Meta is actively developing a number of new tools that make the app's appearance more malleable. In the latter WhatsApp for iOS beta, there are references to an upcoming chat theme feature that could give users more control over the cosmetics.

According to WABetaInfo, the latest TestFlight version of WhatsApp for iOS gives us a first look at the upcoming chat theme feature. When Meta rolls out this addition, iPhone users will be able to customize the color of the chat bubbles and the background.

Unlike some other IM apps, WhatsApp's chat theme feature could be limited to just five preset colors. These include the standard green, along with white, blue, pink and purple.

Besides customizing the chat bubbles and background, WhatsApp has also developed a new option to control the accent color of the app. If released, iOS users will be able to change the color of the in-app button from green to one of the aforementioned shades.

It's worth noting that these features are still in development. So obviously it could be months before Meta rolls them out to the public – if it decides to go ahead at all. It's not immediately clear whether Android users will also get the same features. You can't rule out feature parity as an ultimate goal, but theme-related features apparently haven't been discovered yet for the Android client.
