WhatsApp is plotting a major change that will allow users to ditch the app's 'ugly' green refresh after a huge backlash

EAGLE-EYED WhatsApp users may have noticed a new shade of green across the app in recent weeks, following a redesign from Meta.

But the seemingly small change is left users in turmoilthe brand of the green innovation “ugly”.

While Meta's instant messenger hasn't traditionally offered much in the way of customization, WhatsApp will reportedly slap users after the backlash.

In the latest unreleased version of WhatsApp on iOS, beta testers at WABetaInfo have found new chat theme colors that allow users to opt out of the new shade of green.

Users may be able to choose between blue, white, pink and purple color themes.

The themes determine the color of the chat bubbles and wallpaper.

Although, according to the report, WhatsApp has also developed a new option to control the accent color of the app.

If released, iOS users will be able to change the color of the in-app button from green to one of four other colors.

The customization feature is still in development and is therefore in an unreleased version of the iPhone app.

When Meta rolls out the new feature, iPhone owners will be able to customize the color of the chat bubbles and the background.

The feature is not yet available on Android.

The app in its current form does not allow users to make changes to the color.

It's important to note that Meta may be scrapping the feature before it rolls out globally.

And while Meta is excited about the new addition, it could still be months before it becomes public.

Within the backlash

WhatsApp users first noticed the color change in April.

Meta sometimes rolls out features to a handful of users as a kind of “patch test.”

“The new WhatsApp interface has no atmosphere at all, from blue to green. How? Why?” one person wrote further X.

“WhatsApp, if it ain't broke don't fix it,” said another.

“Captivating with the new green color and the sentence leads!”

Many were hoping the company would reverse the feature, but instead the company just doubled down on the change.

In a statement at the time Meta said: “We've made some changes to how WhatsApp looks and feels, including spacing, colors, icons and more.

“These changes bring a modern, new experience to WhatsApp and make it more accessible and user-friendly.”
