Andy Farrell is convinced Ireland can quickly learn lessons from New Zealand’s dismantling to stay alive in the series.

The Irish already face an uphill task to save their three-Test tour after slipping to a comprehensive 42-19 defeat in Auckland.

Ian Foster’s formidable All Blacks ran in six tries on Saturday, including four in the space of just 18 minutes into the first half, to maintain their country’s remarkable 28-year unbeaten run at Eden Park.

Despite falling far short of hitting that point, Farrell insists his team is far from dejected for next week’s crucial showdown in Dunedin.

“You don’t get many chances to break a record; it’s an excellent record and you can see why they’re holding it,” he said.

“We are gutted to lose but having said that the players know what they did well and they know how the game went and things we need to fix to stay in a series next week.

“It’s not a downcast locker room; it’s one that dusts itself off, learns the lessons and attacks next week.”

Captain Johnny Sexton must pass further head injury testing to qualify for the second test after taking off in the wake of Reece’s attempt, while backup whore Dave Heffernan is out due to a concussion.

Farrell and his coaching staff now have a full week to prepare for the second installment of the series, having played a warm-up game against the Maori All Blacks leading up to the opener.

When asked if that simplifies preparation, he replied: “Of course it’s easier, but having it easy, is that what we want? I don’t know.

“We’re here to test ourselves in all sorts of ways and we’re here to test ourselves as a staff to see how we handle two games (in a week) and we’re here to see if our players have excuses or not. regarding backup and different ways of training.

“Doing it that way makes us stronger as a group, strengthens our culture, strengthens our environment and prepares us for obstacles that are sure to stand in our way for the next 18 months.”
