When is the draw for the 2024-2025 Champions League and how does it work?

This season Champions League will have a radically different feel and rhythm as Europe's premier club competition switches to a 36-team 'Swiss model'.

It means four more teams in the tournament and the end of the group stage, with all clubs playing in one competition. Each team has eight games for the knockout stage, four home and four away, against eight different opponents. Two from each of the four pots.

The top eight at the end of the league phase will go straight through to the last 16, with the ninth to 24th teams playing an additional two-leg play-off. For more information on the format click here.

Here's everything you need to know about the draw that will determine the first phase of the new competition.

When is the Champions League draw?

The fixtures for the league phase will be announced on Thursday, August 29.

Where is the Champions League draw?

The event will take place in Monaco, at the Grimaldi Forum.

How does the Champions League draw work?

Technically, it’s not a draw at all. Uefa says a manual draw would require almost 1,000 balls in more than 36 bowls and take more than four hours, given the new format.

Instead, each of the 36 teams, starting with the presumed strongest teams in Pot One, will be manually drawn from a bowl. A supercomputer will then allocate them their eight league stage matches, which will be shown on a screen for the public and television viewers at home.

Once this has been done for the nine Pot 1 clubs, the clubs in Pot 2 will discover their other six fixtures (their two fixtures against Pot 1 opponents have already been announced). And so on.

The design should take shape quickly and the process should proceed relatively quickly.
