Dan Biggar praised Wales’ “huge achievement” after his team of history makers stunned world champions South Africa 13-12 in Bloemfontein.
It was Wales’ first win against the Springboks on South African soil, ending 58 years of pain and the 12th attempt.
After an embarrassing three-point defeat in last weekend’s series opener, Wayne Pivac’s team made no mistake on the second question and fielded a decider in Cape Town next Saturday.
Josh Adams’ 78th-minute try was converted from the sidelines by fellow substitute Gareth Anscombe – who went for Biggar early in the second half – as Wales tied the series.
“We have earned the right to enjoy this victory as it is a huge achievement,” said Wales captain Biggar.
“There have been some very, very good Wales teams that have come here and been sent away. We are a very close group and everyone deserves a pat on the back.
“I mentioned before the game in my speech [to the players] “It was an easy task to captain this team because we have a great group of guys who are rolling up their sleeves and taking their socks off.”
Biggar (shoulder) and wing Alex Cuthbert (arm) both left early as Wales dug deep to take a memorable win.
“I’m in a bit of pain so we’ll see how it goes tomorrow, but the last two minutes made it a bit better,” said Biggar.
“I’ll be desperate to be involved next Saturday. Hopefully it’s just a blast and nothing more.”
