and Federer tonight the curtain on his illustrious career with a very special match at the Laver Cup in London.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion announced his retirement from tennis last week via a social media post: “To my tennis family and beyond. Of all the gifts tennis has given me over the years, the greatest are undoubtedly the people I met along the way: my friends, my competitors and most importantly the fans who sport it is life. Today I want to share some news with you,” he said.
“As many of you know, the past three years have presented me with challenges in the form of injuries and surgeries. I’ve been working hard to get back to full competitive form.

“But I also know my body’s capabilities and limits, and the message I’ve been carrying lately has been clear. I am 41 years old. I’ve played over 1,500 games in 24 years. Tennis has treated me more generously than I could have ever dreamed, and now I have to recognize when it’s time to end my competitive career.
“The Laver Cup next week in London will be my last ATP event. I will of course play more tennis in the future, but just not in Grand Slams or on the tour.”
But first he will team up with Rafael NadalNovak Djokovic and Andy Murray as Europe takes on Team World.
Europe has won all four previous editions of the tournament, but players like Felix Auger-Aliassime, Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe are hoping to take the world’s first win under captain John McEnroe.
The tournament is named after Australian tennis legend Rod Laver, widely regarded as one of the greatest in the sport’s history.

When is the Laver Cup on TV?
The Laver Cup starts on Friday, September 23 and ends on Sunday, September 25. The tournament will be screened in the UK on Eurosport and can be streamed online on Discovery Plus.
How does the Laver Cup work?
Singles and doubles are played every day, and Friday’s games are worth one point, Saturday’s two and Sunday’s three.
Each player plays in at least one singles match during the first two days, but no player can play more than two singles matches during the three days.
At least four players from each team must play doubles, but a doubles combination may not be used more than once. Federer will play doubles only on Friday and will team up with longtime rival Nadal to take on Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe.
