Now that the Amy Winehouse biopic is full steam ahead, the search for the perfect actress to play the iconic musician†
Following the success of musician-based biopics such as Elvis by Baz Luhrman with Austin Butler, Sam Taylor-Johnson is set to direct Back to black about the life and tragic death of the Grammy-winning superstar.
It has been reported that the Fifty Shades of grey Director and good friend of the deceased singer is looking for a ‘relative newcomer’ with casting director Nina Gold to fulfill the role of Amy in the film.
Gold has excelled at casting throughout her career, especially when it comes to discovering young new talent such as Maisie Williams for Game of Thrones and Daisy Ridley for Star Wars.
In the past, Winehouse’s father, Mitch, expressed a similar wish by saying in 2018: ‘I wouldn’t mind betting it would be an unknown, young, English – London cockney – actress who is a bit Amy seems.’
This could be the case as Winehouse’s estate, including her father, fully supports this project, especially with Taylor-Johnson at the helm.
However, that hasn’t stopped fans and critics from speculating about who will take on Amy’s iconic role in the upcoming biopic.
Noomi Rapace
Back in 2015, the star of Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Noomi Rapace was signed to play Winehouse in a movie about her life. The project was later shelved and never pulled out of development.
While this project has a new vision and production company, StudioCanal behind it, it looks like Rapace is still in the running for the title role.
Lady Gaga
After her Oscar-winning performance in A star is bornit’s no surprise that Lady Gaga rumor has it that he is in the running for the part.
Speculation began in 2018 that Gaga would star in Winehouse in a movie, although the late singer’s father denied it at the time.
However, Gaga has both the acting and performance experience to make her an incredibly strong contender for the role. Not to mention she’s already a fan favorite to take on the role.
Alessia Cara
Alessia Cara is another singer-songwriter who could be considered for the role.
The Canadian artist won Best New Artist at the Grammys in 2018 and has since had a plethora of singles topping the charts.
There are rumors that Cara’s name will be included in the film after she made a stunning transformation into Winehouse for Halloween last year.
Lauren Jauregui
American singer-songwriter Laurens palace is another musician reportedly being considered for the role of Amy.
Jauregi was part of Fifth Harmony, one of the best-selling girl groups of all time. During her time with the band, she performed in a Lip Sync fight as Winehouse in 2018.
With the killer beehive haircut and thick eyeliner, fans have already glimpsed the striking resemblance she bears to the late singer.
Alexa Half
Euphorias Alexa Demie is another potential for the titular role.
Best known for her role as Maddy Perez in the HBO teen drama, she again bears a strong resemblance to Winehouse.
Julia Fox
That’s right – Uncut Gems star Julia FoxHis name has also been thrown in the ring for the role.
