Thousands of people have admitted not knowing a simple grammar rule after a mother of two posted a now viral video on TikTok.
At the age of 32, Gemma Lou had only just realized the reason why adverbs such as ‘first’, ‘second’, ‘third’ and so on are abbreviated with certain letters, eg ‘1st’, ‘2nd’ and ‘3rd’.
In the video she explains how the last letters of the written words are taken and placed after the corresponding numbers.

The clip has since been viewed a whopping 2.7 million times and received more than 2,500 comments from many who confess to having “no idea” the rule existed.
“At my advanced age of 32, I just learned that the ‘st’ are in the 1st, ‘nd’ in the 2nd and ‘rd’ in the 3rd because they are the last letters of the words ‘first’ and so on,” Gemma , from the UK, wrote in the short video.
The clip has since been viewed a whopping 2.7 million times and received more than 2,500 comments from many who admitted they had “no idea” the rule existed.
“Why didn’t I know this?” one person wrote, while another added, “Absolutely stunned.”
In the comments others said ‘oh my god’, ‘no way’, ‘wait what?’ and ‘I am genuinely shocked’.
On the other hand, many said they liked the “common sense” rule and were aware of the reasoning for years.
“English is my second language and I’ve known that since primary school,” one wrote.
“I’m concerned about everyone in the comments,” added another.
A third said: ‘I thought this was a matter of common sense – I’ve known it since primary school and I’m 13.’
