Woman arrested after service guard seriously injured in Limerick hit-and-run

A woman has been arrested after a Garda who was not on duty was seriously injured in a hit-and-run incident in Co Limerick last night.

arda and Emergency Services rushed to the scene shortly after 7.15pm, where the cyclist was discovered with serious injuries on the R522 between Dromcollogher (Dromcolliher) and Feohanagh near Newcastle West.

The cyclist, a man in his 50s, was treated at the scene and taken by helicopter to Cork University Hospital where his injuries are described as serious.

It is understood that the actions of the first responding Garda at the scene may have provided lifesaving.

Gardai said a woman in her 20s was subsequently arrested by investigators in connection with the incident.

“She is currently being held at Henry Street Garda Station in terms of section 4 of the Criminal Law Act,” a Garda spokesperson said.

“A car that was allegedly involved in the incident for forensic investigation was seized.”

The scene was investigated by Garda Forensic Collision investigators and the road has since been reopened to traffic.

Gardaí appeals to any person who may have witnessed the collision to contact them.

“Any road users who were driving on the R522 between Dromcollogher and Feohanagh at the time of the incident with camera footage (including dash cam) are asked to make it available to investigate Gardaí,” the press office said. “Investigations are underway.”
