Woman had to officially identify her late husband’s body outside their home at 5am after he was shot

A Dublin woman had to formally identify the body of her late husband Michael Tormey shortly after 5 a.m. as it lay on the floor outside their family home, an inquest has found.

The Dublin County Coroner’s hearing was informed that Mr Tormey, 49, a father of three, had been fatally injured in a gun attack at his home in Thomond Park, Ballyfermot, on 9 January.

The victim, who worked as a security salesman and doorman, suffered a number of gunshot wounds when he returned from a social function around 4:30 am.

During a brief hearing on the inquest, the coroner, Aisling Gannon, said an autopsy had confirmed that Mr Tormey had died as a result of traumatic gunshot wounds.

The inquest learned that Mr Tormey’s wife, Amy Brennan, who was not present in court, had confirmed her husband’s identity to Gardaí by pointing to a body on the ground outside their home.

Garda Lisa Sexton said she later identified the body to assistant state pathologist, Margot Bolster, at the Dublin City Mortuary in Whitehall.

Inspector Dan O’Callaghan requested that the investigation be adjourned under Section 25 of the Coroner’s Act on the grounds that criminal proceedings had been initiated in the case.

On January 19, Christopher Devine, 40, an unemployed man with an address in Convent Lawns, Ballyfermot, was charged with the murder of Mr Tormey.

He then applied for bail and was granted bail by the Supreme Court the following month.

The DPP confirmed last month that Mr Devine will be forwarded for trial on indictment at the Central Criminal Court.

In a separate hearing, the court heard from the coroner that criminal proceedings are being considered in connection with the death of a Ballyfermot woman who was fatally injured last year when she was hit by a taxi on her way home.

Rachel Meehan, 54, a mother of five, was killed on her way home from a night out when she was hit by a vehicle on Davitt Road, Drimnagh around 1.45 am on 31 October 2021.

An autopsy revealed that Ms. Meehan had died as a result of multiple traumatic injuries consistent with a traffic accident.

The judicial inquiry was adjourned to January 12, 2023, as Gardaí gave evidence that the DPP was awaiting clues in the case.
