Woman says giving birth on a rescue helicopter was a ‘perfect’ experience

Ms Trevithick, a brewer, went into labor on the evening of 4 December and went with her partner, Hayden Simpson, 38, to the birthing center at St Mary’s.

The midwife discovered some meconium when her water broke, meaning it became an emergency and she had to be flown to hospital by helicopter – an 89km journey to the UK mainland.

Mothers in the Isles of Scilly are often flown if there are potential complications that require additional medical attention not available on the outlying islands.

Ebbyn now joins a select group of Scillonians born on the Coast Guard helicopter, including Torran in 2018 and Marcus in 2013.

Ms Trevithick added: “During my first pregnancy, with my daughter, I was also flown out and when I found out the helicopter was on its way, the contractions and everything stopped.

“But with this one I heard the helicopter approaching, but there was no sign of anything slowing down.”

Once on board, she said the situation was progressing rapidly.

She told the BBC: “I knew we hadn’t landed yet and I reached down to feel the head and I was like ‘OK’.”

It took five hours from the onset of contractions to the birth of the baby just after 2 a.m. on December 5.
