The Waimate District Council has requested more information from groups wishing to build an international-grade 18-hole disc golf course.

A report on Waimate 2gether’s proposal for a course at Knottingley Park was discussed by the Council on Tuesday.

The council agreed to endorse the proposal in principle and requested the submission of a detailed design, including a complete assessment of the potential impact of the course on current and future users, communities, and the environment.

This course will be the second course in the district participating in the 9-hole course in Victoria Park, which opened in November 2020.

Peter Vendetti, project manager at Waimate2gether, previously stated that the Victoria Park Course is an introductory course for disc golf.

“We want to attract players and tournaments from national and international circuits,” Vendetti said.

“We have applied for $ 60,000 in funding from the Home Office, which requires council approval.”

According to Vendetti, if the project is approved, the course will include a significant amount of volunteer labor for ongoing maintenance and the course will always require volunteers.

“We want to start working on the project in the summer, so late this year or early next year,” he said.

Allison Banks, the council’s park and sanctuary manager, began inventing metal baskets in California in 1975. Disc golf estimates that one disc maker has more than 5,000 people participating in the sport every day. It is very popular in the United States.

“There are more than 600 courses that are very popular in Finland and have a population of 5.5 million,” Banks said.

New Zealand’s first course was set up in Queenstown Gardens in 1996, almost 20 years before Christchurch’s Jellie Park flagship course, which opened in 2015.

“Playing time can go through an 18-hole round in about an hour, and age is not a barrier,” she said.

The submission states that much consideration was taken for the proposal, including the potential impact of such activities on the park’s natural environment.

Another consideration is that for national events, the Knottingley Park campground is a good location for an overnight stay and can accommodate a large number of vehicles and tents.

The bank said there may be an opportunity to build a cabin at the campsite (similar to the Victoria Park campsite) in the future if demand permits.

Currently, there are 46 courses throughout New Zealand and 5 in South Canterbury, including the existing Victoria Park course.
