Netflix is you star Penn Badgley revealed that the show’s directors actually gave him advice on his masturbation technique for his role.
Penn plays the creepy stalker and serial killer Joe Goldberg throughout the three seasons, and is in the works for the fourth.
Along the way, he’s stalked, stalked, and even fathered women in the most recent season, all with an eerie voiceover that reveals his inner stalker-like thoughts and tendencies.
In many episodes, Penn takes part in graphic seasons of masturbation, which, as he has now revealed, were criticized by the directors.
Speaking on the Stitcher’s Podcrushed Podcastas reported by the daily star, Penn admitted, “I’ve always gotten the note to make it less scary.
“They say something like, ‘Close your eyes or go faster or slow down.’
“I’m like, ‘What? This man kills people, and he masturbates in the street.
‘You mean I’m making it scary? How come I’m the one making it scary?!’”
Penn also revealed how “strange” it was to film the scenes, especially after he was repeatedly criticized for “keeping his eyes open” while pretending to masturbate.
He added: ‘It’s strange – you don’t think it’s going to be such a big deal.
“And then you find out in front of a group of people with a camera on your face, knowing that in all likelihood millions of people are going to see this, you’re mimicking masturbation.”
Season three of You depicts stalker Joe struggling with his first aging and trying to settle into his new life.
But things don’t stay rosy for long, of course, because drama and murder are never far behind when it comes to Joe and Love.
As the show is poised to return for its fourth series, co-creator Sera Gamble . promised Variety that the next run will “explore new, darker facets of love,” but we’re struggling to see how things could potentially get darker.
You are available to watch on Netflix.
