TL; DR

  • A recently surfaced Apple patent shows that the company is exploring a foldable device with an innovative hinge mechanism.
  • Details in the patent suggest a flip-style clamshell that folds with a hinge that can be folded either inward or outward.
  • While an Apple foldable computer would generate tremendous interest, the company's reputation for seamless user experiences raises the stakes and makes a flawless debut crucial.

While rivals like Samsung, Motorola and others have embraced it foldable phonesApple remains a notable mainstay. Despite waves of rumors and leaks pointing to a foldable device iPhone is in development, nothing concrete has been released yet. However, a recently published patent application discovered by Clearly apple gives us new insights into Apple's explorations of foldable devices. (h/t: TelephoneArena)

Apple's patent, filed last October with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), describes a new hinge design for foldable displays. The images used correspond to a flip-style folding clamshell. However, Apple's patent implies a greater range of motion. The hinge could potentially allow the device to fold both inwards and outwards, which could be a first for a mass-market product.

It is striking that the patent deliberately keeps the wording broad. The hinge described may apply to phones, tablets, laptops or other portable electronics. However, if a foldable iPhone becomes a reality, Apple could prioritize a clamshell format before experimenting with a book-style design.

Alternatively, we could even see a foldable tablet/laptop hybrid emerge, which would make sense considering how close the latter is iPads and MacBooks are in terms of internal specifications and prices.

Why a foldable Apple seems risky yet exciting

Unlike foldable Android devices, which initially targeted a niche market and developed gradually, an Apple foldable device would immediately be thrust into the global spotlight. Apple products attract the attention of both technology enthusiasts and ordinary consumers. This means that even minor issues from the first generation, whether hinge imperfections or screen quirks, will likely be amplified and explored on a large scale.

Plus, Apple's reputation for intuitive, easy-to-use devices sets the bar high when it comes to folding them. The technology introduces inherent complexities, and Apple is expected to provide a seamless experience even for those unfamiliar with the form factor. This pressure likely contributes to Apple's cautious approach.

Of course, a patent does not guarantee a product release; Apple files many patents every year, only a fraction of which see the light of day. However, one thing is certain: if and when an Apple foldable computer comes to market, it will have significant ripple effects throughout the foldable industry, likely raising the bar for competitors and ultimately benefiting consumers.
