A chunk of ice fell from a plane and struck a family's goat dead.
The freak accident happened around 9:30 a.m. Monday while Cassidy Lewis was at her home in Eagle Mountain, Utah.
Lewis said she heard a loud bang and her entire house shook.
She ran outside and saw her animals react in shock.
'The roosters panicked, the horses went crazy,” Lewis said TO television.
Lewis then noticed a large hole through the roof of a barn where she kept her goats. One of the goats was injured and bleeding.
There were chunks of ice under the hole in the ground.
“It was at least a basketball-sized patch of ice, I'm guessing, mainly because of the size of the hole and the amount of ice there was on the ground,” Lewis said.
Lewis was initially confused and thought it might be an explosion.
Images from the scene showed ice on the roof next to a hole and the inside of the shed was punctured at the top.
The arriving law enforcement officers came up with only one plausible explanation: that the ice had fallen from an airplane.
“He just said we're under the flight path and it could be ice from an airplane, which I didn't even know could happen,” Lewis said.
Lewis took her goat to a vet, who said it could not be saved. The pet was euthanized.
She has contacted the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Salt Lake City International Airport asking them to investigate the incident.
Lewis said the FAA told her they are investigating which plane the ice may have fallen from.
Her house is on the flight path to the airport.
“Honestly, every time I hear a plane go by, I think, 'It makes me a little nervous that it's happening again,'” she said.
'We are apparently very unlucky that it has hit us.'
In the US, it is not common for ice to fall from airplanes. However, it does happen and some cases have been reported.
