FANS of British bread are standing up after the baguette received a cultural award – while our classic white bread was frowned upon.
United Nations chefs added French sticking to the list of “cherished traditions to be preserved by mankind”.
But according to Caroline Kenyon, founder of the World Bread Awards, our beloved British bakes deserve a piece of the action too.
She told The Sun: “For the sake of Entente Cordiale, please add the magnificent Great British White to the list.
“What could be better than a delicious fresh crusty white bread?
“I am delighted to tell you that bread baking in Britain is in great shape and we have never had so many talented bakers.”
She was supported by Tory MP Nigel Mills, who said: “This is madness. The British bread should definitely be on the list. It’s crazy it wasn’t included in the first place.
“It’s much better than the French baguette.”
The omission of old favorites like Mother’s Pride also baffled bread fanatic Simone Allen, 41, from Derbywho said: “This feels like a joke.
“British bread has more tradition than the baguette.”
The AND Former French minister Audrey Azoulay, the head of cultural institutions, said the decision is not just about bread, but also about honoring the daily ritual of artisan bakers.
However, some of her fellow Frenchmen claimed that the bread is not as good as it used to be.
Marine Fourchier, 52, van Parissaid, “It’s very easy to get a bad baguette in France.”
