Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon) has already been through something horrible online trolling in Coronation Street when she first got involved in green initiatives to improve Weatherfield and found herself making enemies.
The online abuse of that time involved in Maria’s image used to fake a pornographic video and one of the people accused of trolling her also started stalking her as the ordeal escalated.
Like a storyline that all seemed to die off, but the topic of online abuse hasn’t gone away, and in the coming episodes, Maria becomes a target of hatred once again – to the point where she begins to fear for her safety once again.
“When the trolling comes back, it won’t be so much fun. It brings back the memories of the last time it happened,” says Samia. “The last time she was afraid to leave the house.”
While people may say avoiding social media will solve the problem, Samia explains that Maria can’t because her job involves communicating with the public.
“She says to Gary (Mikey North), ‘I can’t not read it, I have to because sometimes it can be helpful to listen to people’s opinions,’ says Samia.
“But of course it’s just not fun and she’s worried about her safety and that of her family again.
“It’s not very nice.”
