Last week in Hainaut, East London, a man killed a 14-year-old boy and injured four others after he went on a violent rampage and attacked people with a large sword.

Police rushed to the area after reports that a van had rammed into a house just before a knifeman began prowling the streets.

He then attacked two officers before being tasered and arrested in a bloody scuffle in front of shocked residents who heard 'piercing screams'.

The suspect, Marcus Arduini Monzo, has since been charged with the murder of schoolboy Daniel Anjorin and two counts of attempted murder. He will appear at the Old Bailey.

Knife crime in the capital became a prominent campaign issue during this year's London mayoral elections. During a debate about LBCMayor Sadiq Khan and Tory candidate Susan Hall clashed during a discussion about knife crime.

Mr Khan dismissed Ms Hall's fears about rising crime rates after she claimed there were 'gangs running around with machetes' in London.

She added: “Those are the stories I hear from the people who run the night-time economy. That is not good.'

Mr Khan replied: 'I'm saying in a respectful way that I think the Tory candidate should stop watching The Wire. We don't live in Baltimore, USA, in the 1990s.'

Khan comfortably won re-election in last Thursday's elections.
